Sulu-German underground trade-for-arms channel (1864-1880s)

1864-1880s Jolo - Singapore

Sustained commercial-diplomatic channel running through Singapore, bypassing Spanish-controlled ports of Manila and Zamboanga. Sulu exported coffee, pearls, mother-of-pearl, tripang, silk, opium; received German-manufactured firearms (Mausers especially) that materially extended the Sultanate's capacity to resist Spanish military pressure. Schück functioned as de facto trade consul. Kahawa Sūg in this period was a sovereignty commodity, not only a household beverage.
